On November 8, 2021, in the spirit of the yuletide season, LTJG AIRA AGUILAR PN of BRP Andres Bonifacio (PS17) was seen giving early Christmas presents to a group of fishermen during one of their regular inspections of fishing vessels while operating in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone about 70 nautical miles (112 Kms) east of Davao Oriental.
Situated within a region with the highest marine biodiversity, the Philippines is one of the fish-producing countries in the world. Playing a key role in the lives and livelihoods of Filipinos, the sustainable fisheries industry serves as the primary consideration in the development, management, and conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources. Sustainable fisheries industry to achieve food security also calls for commitment and active participation of all industry players including the security sector.
Philippine Navy ships, operating in support of the mission of the Unified Commands of the AFP, regularly conduct sovereignty patrol and sustained maritime presence to protect Filipino fishermen, and assist the government in ensuring sustainable fishing.
PS17 is operating under the operational control of Naval Task Force 71 of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, Eastern Mindanao Command, AFP. She is one of the high-endurance patrol ships of the Philippine Fleet that regularly patrols the country’s territorial waters to include the Exclusive Economic Zone.
