A detachment of ships and vessels of the Northern Fleet, led by the large anti-submarine ship “Vice-Admiral Kulakov”, made a business call at the port of Praia, the capital of the island republic of Cape Verde, which is in the Atlantic Ocean off the western coast of Africa. This is the second call of Russian sailors to the port of the island state during a long voyage. The first one was more than a month ago on the way of ships and vessels to the Gulf of Guinea.
Anchorage of the ship and support vessels in the port will last for several days. During this time, the Severomorians will replenish their water and food supplies, as well as take a break from the sea voyage on the shore.
From the first decade to the end of October, the North Sea people ensured the safety of civilian shipping off the coast of Africa in the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean. On October 25, the crew of the VPK “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” prevented the seizure by unknown armed men of the container ship “Lucia” sailing under the flag of Panama from the Republic of Togo to Cameroon.
The pirates attempting to hijack the ship left the container ship when a Ka-27PS helicopter arrived with a group of marines that took off from a Russian warship to monitor the surface situation. An anti-terrorist countermeasures group was landed on board the bulk carrier, freed a crew of 22 people and examined the ship.
During the anti-piracy watch, the Severomors inspected several civilian ships and ensured the safe escort of the Lucie container ship.
The long-range cruise of the VPK “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” began on June 28 with the exit from the main base of the Northern Fleet – Severomorsk. The crew of the ship took part in the Main Naval Parade in Kronstadt, and after its completion, worked out individual episodes of practical actions in the Atlantic during a command and staff training in commanding the forces and troops of the Northern Fleet.
From August 18 to September 23, the Severomors performed tasks as part of a permanent task force of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean. During this time, they made business calls to Algeria, Syria and Cyprus, and conducted a number of exercises on several types of defense of a detachment of ships in the transition by sea and worked out the search for submarines of a conditional enemy.
Since leaving the base, the VPK “Vice-Admiral Kulakov” has traveled more than 23 thousand nautical miles, visiting the ports of five foreign countries.
