The Navy completed this afternoon, December 4, a monitoring and tracking operation of the Russian Federation’s scientific and oceanographic research vessel Akademik Nemchinov, which began on the morning of Monday, December 2.
The Maritime Operations Center permanently monitored the activity of the Russian Federation vessel and coordinated the use of the NRP Figueira da Foz, which accompanied the vessel during its transit through the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Azores.
This operation ended at 6 pm today, culminating a monitoring and surveillance action lasting more than 48 hours.
The Navy, through these monitoring and surveillance actions, guarantees the defense and security of maritime spaces under national sovereignty, jurisdiction or responsibility, contributes to the protection of Portugal’s interests and its critical infrastructures and, at the same time, ensures compliance with international commitments assumed within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
