The mission, lasting about three months, aims to contribute to the knowledge of the maritime environment, scientific development and cooperative security on the west coast of Africa. The NRP D. Carlos I will join the NRP Zaire, a ship that is on a permanent mission in São Tomé and Príncipe. This Portuguese Naval Force will develop activities in support of diplomacy and cooperation with the Angolan Navy, the Coast Guard of Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Parallel to the military-naval missions, the hydro-oceanographic vessel will conduct scientific campaigns, environmental observations and marine research with various organizations and scientists from those countries.
The Open Sea mission also includes the Navy’s participation in the European Union’s pilot project on the Coordinated Maritime Presences in the Gulf of Guinea.
