Defense Minister Jorge Taiana visited the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base and the Comandante Espora Air Naval Base August 27, where he witnessed various military exercises and spoke with men and women of the Argentine Navy. “Our Navy has a great disposition to work in the protection of our river sovereignty,” said Taiana.
The visit began at the facilities of the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base, which this year celebrates its 125th anniversary of creation.
“In this visit I was able to see the professionalism, and the good work that is being done in our naval fleet,” said Taiana, who also stressed the “importance of FONDEF in the recovery and modernization of equipment.”
Accompanied by the Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Division General Juan Martín Paleo, and the head of the host weapon, Vice Admiral Julio Horacio Guardia, the minister celebrated that his first visit fortunately coincided “with these exercises that allowed me to appreciate the professionalism of the force. .
He also pointed out that the ARA Almirante Irizar Icebreaker is located on this same base, which is essential to carry out the next Antarctic campaign.
The tour began in Espora, where Taiana and his entourage were received by the Naval Aviation Commander, Rear Admiral Eduardo Miguel Tourné, who explained the operational components in that unit. Then, on board a Fennec helicopter, they witnessed different exercises of the sea fleet and, once they were on board the destroyer ARA “Sarandí”, they were able to appreciate a naval magazine in which the corvettes ARA “Espora” and ARA “Spiro” participated. , ARA “Robinson” and the ocean patrol boat ARA “Piedrabuena”.
The day ended at the Puerto Belgrano facilities, with an amphibious demonstration, carried out by the Marine Corps; and the tour of the Carena Docks and the Naval Arsenal where repair and maintenance tasks are carried out on surface vessels.
The Argentine Navy maintains a fraternal relationship with the Navies of the region, sharing different activities and instances of cooperation. Such is the case of the celebration to mark the Bicentennial of the Peruvian Navy, an event in which the frigate ARA “Libertad” and the destroyer ARA “Sarandí” will participate.
In addition to the authorities who accompanied the minister on his tour, the Secretary of Strategy and Military Affairs, Sergio Rossi and the head of the Air Force, Brigadier Major Xavier Julián Isaac, among other special guests, were present.
