Russian Navy Cleaning Wrangel Island

August 30, 2021 – In 2014, Russia announced they were going to open a naval facility on Wrangel Island in Arctic waters. In 2016 SIGINT and radar stations were noted on the island, likely due it being approximately 300 miles from Alaska.

The environmental division of the Troops and Forces in the North-East of Russia has begun cleaning Wrangel Island from household waste and waste property.

On the eve, servicemen of the ecological platoon arrived in the seagoing tug “Andrey Stepanov” from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Wrangel Island in the Arctic zone.

According to the instructions of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in 2021, cleaning of the territory and removal of garbage using military vessels for its further disposal continues on Wrangel Island.

Until the end of the navigation period, more than 50 military personnel and 10 units of special equipment will be involved in the environmental event. The environmental division of the Pacific Fleet includes a bulldozer, modern cranes with a lifting capacity of 25 and 40 tons, scrap trucks based on a KamAZ truck with a manipulator crane, dump trucks, tracked conveyors, a fuel tanker and baling presses.

During the environmental expedition, cargo will also be delivered to support the life of the Pacific Fleet units deployed in remote duty stations.
