First Binational Mistral Exercise

April 2, 2020 (Google Translation) – From March 21 to 25, 2021, the Amphibious Helicopter Carrier (PHA) Mistral participated in the 2021 edition of the CLEOPATRA exercise which involved Egyptian vessels: we sistership the PHA Anwar el-Sadate , the frigate el Fateh and the patrol boat Souman Ezzat .

Organized every two years, this exercise took place in Egyptian waters. Thus, the two navies have strengthened their interoperability in the fields of maritime surveillance, anti-ship warfare and the evacuation of nationals.

Between anti-surface warfare exercises (SURFEX) and tactical evolution exercises (EVOLEX), the el Fateh visiting team also practiced conducting a flag survey on board the Mistral.

The 16th edition of CLEOPATRA ended with the joint visit of the Chief of Staff of the French Navy (CEMM), Admiral Pierre Vandier, and his Egyptian counterpart, Vice-Admiral Ahmed Khaled. Oriented around the theme of an operation to evacuate nationals (RESEVAC), the visit of the CEMMs was an opportunity to present a specific evacuation system implemented jointly by the French and Egyptian crews. In addition, the two authorities were able to appreciate a dynamic demonstration of the amphibious means of the two navies as well as the Franco-Egyptian means of protection alongside a Specialized Marine Intervention Team (ESIM) of the Detroyat battalion and a detachment of Egyptian special forces.

Finally, this exercise helps to maintain the links that unite our two countries, while strengthening France’s international cooperation in the eastern Mediterranean.
