Vital de Oliveira Studying Domestic Oil Spills

November 14, 2019 (Google Translation) – The “Vital de Oliveira” Hydroceanographic Research Ship left Ilhéus-BA Port, on November 13th, to conduct the North-East Coast Environmental Survey Commission, with the purpose of collecting and measuring environmental data, in order to contribute for the understanding of oil dispersion along the affected coast.

The works will take place along the northeastern coast and involve several tasks, such as the realization of oceanographic stations for vertical profiling of temperature and salinity of the water column; collection of water samples for chemical analysis to verify the presence of oil; marine current analysis; sampling of marine soil; and depth measurements using multi-beam echo sounder and Underway-CTD equipment , which makes temperature and salinity measurements with the ship in displacement.

Vital de Oliveira has a complete research infrastructure, concentrating 28 state-of-the-art scientific equipment, allowing interaction between representatives of different institutions in the country and the Brazilian Navy. The ship also has a high capacity to remain in the area of operation for extended periods.
