After almost 40 days sailing through the Chilean Antarctic Territory, the ATF “Galvarino” arrived at its base port, Punta Arenas, successfully fulfilling the tasks entrusted within the Antarctic Campaign 2023-2024.
The Unit dependent on the Third Naval Zone carried out the transfer of people, carried out resupply and logistical support tasks, transferring more than 200 cubic meters of cargo to the “Arturo Prat” Antarctic base, the base of the General Bernardo O’Higgins Army. and Gabriel González Videla, in addition to sailing to Port Lockroy and Deception Island.
The “ Pacific Rhinoceros ” also assumed the role of Antarctic Service Unit within the framework of the Combined Naval Antarctic Patrol (PANC), a task carried out annually in coordination with the Argentine Navy. During this period patrols were carried out, reaching the Antarctic Circle area.
The Commander of the Unit, Captain Ariel Gutiérrez, pointed out that “ during this commission framed in the 2023-2024 Antarctic Campaign that began on December 17, I appreciate the commitment of my crew for the intense work they carried out. We managed to fulfill the tasks entrusted by the Institution, supporting the different bases and fulfilling our surveillance work in the PANC, navigating 4,774 nautical miles during that period, the equivalent of 8,841 kilometers. With this we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding life at sea, controlling maritime traffic and protecting the marine environment .”
The Chilean Navy reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding human life at sea, international cooperation and territorial security, thus allowing the permanent action of the Institution on the White Continent.
