October 7, 2018 – USS Ashland (LSD 48) became the first U.S. Navy ship in the 7th Fleet to conduct amphibious operations with the newly established Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF), Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade (ARDB) troops and their equipment on Oct. 2. Marines and Sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) service members completed training with the newly formed JGSDF Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade (ARDB) in Sasebo, Japan, May 24.
