HMS Montrose Visits Singapore

February 20, 2019 – Frigate HMS Montrose has begun the latest leg of a 20,000-mile voyage to the Gulf after ten days in Singapore. The Plymouth-based warship used the ten-day break in the Commonwealth nation to allow maintenance to be carried out after a 16,000-mile journey from home via the Caribbean and Pacific. And it allowed the ship’s company an extended break after four months mostly at sea – allowing many sailors to fly loved ones out to join them in the ‘city of the lion’. The ship berthed at…

HMS Queen Elizabeth Arrives in Norfolk

September 17, 2018 – HMS Queen Elizabeth has arrived in Norfolk, Virginia, having escaped the clutches of Hurricane Florence, which is continuing to wreak devastation over large areas of the East Coast of the USA. The ‘WESTLANT 18’ Task Group, which includes the carrier’s escort, HMS Monmouth, was forced to take evasive action to avoid the damaging winds which have lashed North and South Carolina and Virginia, bringing tidal surges and several months’ worth of rain throughout the weekend. Instead of heading directly north from Mayport Naval Base last week,…

HMS Monmouth’s never bored by board and search operations

As Royal Marines scurry down a rope from a Wildcat helicopter on to a ship’s forecastle, a speed boat packed with sailors races alongside the hull – and the men and women of HMS Monmouth hone their terrorist take-down skills. They devoted a day in the oppressive heat and humidity of the Arabian Sea practicing essential board and search techniques – techniques which have already brought the Royal Navy’s biggest drugs bust of the year. Few operations are more fast moving – and more dangerous – than board and search.…
