March 8, 2019 (Google Translation) – On 1 and 2 March, the Galatea ship , a hydro-oceanographic unit of the Italian Navy, parked at the port of Termoli , hosted the students of the State Nautical Technical Institute “Ugo Tiberio” on board . More than 90 boys visited the ship, taking the opportunity to focus on the topics dealt with at school in the reality of life on board.
The young nautical students were able to deepen the processes of updating the nautical documentation and verification of the seabed, as well as the analysis techniques of the chemical-physical parameters of the waters, useful for the oceanographic study of the Mediterranean and the characterization of the seabed.
Nave Galatea in fact constitutes a scientific laboratory which is the fruit, in the construction and preparation, of the most advanced technologies, which the Marina entrusts to its hydrographic specialists to perform hydro-oceanographic surveys with the most modern methods of acquisition and validation of data required by international standards for the realization of the maps, according to a dual and complementary use assigned to the Navy in the hydro-oceanographic sector.
The hydrographers board, highly specialized and trained at the Navy Hydrographic Institute, were able to show the process of building a new chart, both print and electronic, from data collection phase until the final valuation.
In the next few days, Galatea ship will head to Taranto, where it will carry out scheduled maintenance to ensure its full efficiency before the 2019 Hydro-oceanographic Campaign begins.
