January 15, 2019 – It will be Skåne and Blekinge who will name the two new submarines that FMV will deliver to the Swedish Navy 2024 and 2025.
Providing submarines names by coastal landscape is a tradition where the names are proposed by the Navy and approved by the king, in the form of a so-called appreciation. The final decision is made by the naval manager.
The production of the new submarines is in full swing at the supplier Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona. The design for A26 is based on earlier Swedish submarines, including the air-independent Stirling concept, which means that the A26 should be able to operate for long periods of time without having to charge batteries with snorkel machines.
Being able to seem hidden by a low and balanced signature and being able to listen, track and work are basic characteristics of a submarine. Here, the new Swedish submarines will be at the forefront.
